Beyond Access to Fulfil the Promise of Financial Inclusion

In a video message to the audience at the Symposium on Financial Inclusion in Cape Town, Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands called on attendees to strive for universal financial inclusion, but an inclusion that goes beyond providing poor people with accounts at banks or other financial institutions.

Queen Máxima is the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development. In her message to Symposium attendees, she said that “access alone is not enough. We have to provide people with financial products and services that are really suited to them. And we have to invest in financial education—otherwise the promise of financial inclusion is left an empty shell.”
